Tempered Glass

Tempered glass is manufactured through a process of extremely high temperatures and rapid cooling, making it significantly stronger than standard glass. The glass is heated in a furnace to over 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit and then rapidly cooled using high-pressure airflow. This causes the outer layer of glass to cool much faster than the inner layer, so as the interior cools, it separates from the outer layer. As a result, the interior remains in tension while the exterior enters compression. These conflicting forces make tempered glass much stronger than annealed glass.

Because of its tempering, when this glass breaks, it shatters into small, round pieces rather than sharp, jagged fragments. Untreated, regular glass is known to break into sharp fragments, called splinters, which are a significant cause of injury in extreme weather or attacks such as bomb blasts. Tempered glass is often referred to as "safety glass" because it resists shattering and ensures the safety of building occupants.

Advantages/Benefits

• The biggest advantage of tempered glass over annealed or "regular" glass is its safety. Annealed glass shatters into large, dangerous fragments, while tempered glass disintegrates into relatively harmless small particles.

• The heat-strengthening process used to create tempered glass makes it much stronger than regular glass. It can withstand strong winds, direct impacts, and minor explosions.

• Tempered glass can withstand temperatures up to 230°C (470°F). This property makes it ideal for use in kitchen appliances and in areas frequently exposed to high temperatures, such as bathrooms.

• Tempered glass can be used almost anywhere glass is needed. It can be made into beautiful, sturdy frameless shower doors, completely transparent smartphone screen protectors, and seamless stovetop bases.
